A study published in the British Medical Journal suggest dogs can sniff out bladder cancer in people. Urine from 36 bladder cancer patients and 108 volunteers was used.
Each dog had to sniff 7 samples and lay down next to the cancer patient. Teh dogs average succes rate was 41%, compared to 14% by chance alone. The idea arose after a London woman asked that a mole be cut out of her leg because her dog constantly sniffed at it. She had malignant melanoma. More intruiging : urine from a patient who’d been deemed cancer-free was identified by the dogs as a cancer case. Tests proved the patient had a tumour in the right kidney.
